1. Can you tell us about your bartending experience?

The first of our bartender interview questions is asked to gauge your level of experience. If you’re new to bartending, don’t worry – just focus on any relevant experience you may have.  This includes customer service, working in a fast-paced environment, or anything that showcases your ability to multitask. If you’re lacking experience, you may have to start as a barback and work your way up. This will give you valuable experience managing the bar and assisting the bartender.

2. How do you deal with difficult customers?

Second on our list of bartender questions is dealing with difficult customers. Therefore, it’s important to answer it honestly as you will run into difficult customers on the job. Share an experience you’ve had with a difficult customer and explain how you handled the situation calmly and professionally. It’s also important to mention how you maintain a positive attitude and a friendly demeanor to showcase your soft skills.

3. How do you prioritize your tasks during a busy shift?

This bartender interview question will be asked to assess your organizational and time-management skills. Don’t forget –  life as a bartender will be fast-paced and hectic! It’s important to show that you have a system in place for prioritizing your tasks, such as always attending to customers first, and then handling other duties like restocking supplies or cleaning up. Be sure to mention that you can handle high-stress situations and are able to think on your feet.

4. Can you create a drink for us on the spot?

This bartender interview question is a test of your creativity and knowledge of drink recipes. To prepare for this question, make sure you have a few drink recipes memorized and are familiar with different types of alcohol and mixers. Don’t be afraid to ask for clarification on any ingredients or flavors the interviewer may be looking for and remember to showcase your personality and enthusiasm for the craft.

5. Why do you want to work at this establishment?

This bartender interview question is asked to assess your interest in the job and your fit with the establishment’s culture. Do your research ahead of time and mention specific things that appeal to you, such as the atmosphere, clientele, employee reviews, or specialty drinks all of which you can find on Glassdoor or the company website, and the online restaurant menu. It’s also important to mention how you see yourself contributing to the team and adding value to the establishment.

6. Do you have any questions for me?

Most bartender interviews end with the interviewer turning the tables on you and asking if you have any questions. Although this can be tricky especially if you’ve been engaging and asking questions throughout the interview, it’s always good to have a few extra questions lined up. This is your chance to see if the role would be a good fit for you! It’s a good idea to ask about company culture, pay, what your shifts would be, and what the busiest times are.
