What Is Creative Thinking? An Introduction

April 6, 2016 by TemPositions

Creativity fuels innovation, shaping the world. Picture a life devoid of the wheel, electricity, or smartphones. History shows us that, once upon a time, such technology didn’t exist. Eventually, imaginative minds asked, “What if…?”

Recognizing this, it’s essential for business leaders to encourage their creative team members. However, companies often stifle inventive thought, clinging to familiar routines. They shy away from embracing new ideas. Consequently, this resistance can lead a business into stagnation, while their innovative rivals thrive and expand.

What is Creative Thinking?

A creative thinker resembles an artist, poet, or musician. Moreover, the neighbor transformed an old rowboat into a flowerbed, showcasing creativity. Creative thinking isn’t a method; rather, it’s like a vivid bulb illuminating a grayscale world. Furthermore, artists and cavemen shared creativity; the caveman saw a wheel in a rock.

In business, creative thinking means fresh perspectives yielding unique solutions. While stagnant owners and managers may find these ideas unsettling, they spark profitable innovation. Not just new products and services, but creative thinkers also boost sales through compelling advertising and media utilization.

Managing Creativity

Conundrums arise regarding creativity at work. First and foremost, it defies management. Additionally, surveillance stifles it. However, unleashing it involves liberating the mind. In environments favoring open communication and free sharing, they breed creative thinkers, ultimately casting away the fear of ridicule.

In this context, managers must relinquish control to nurture creative thinking. Google’s example shines in this regard. They empower employees to explore personal projects during the workday. By allocating one day a week to unbridled creativity, Google birthed innovative products like Google Maps and Gmail.

Creative thinking, much like a simmering pot, warrants some distance. When there’s too much scrutiny, it yields naught. However, divert your gaze, and bubbles of creativity emerge. Business leaders embracing free thought discover the same phenomenon. Trust in liberty yields an effervescent flow of innovative ideas.

How to Foster Creative Ideas

Managers, construct that perfect creative environment. To start, prepare to embrace unique ideas. Let creative talent thrive; avoid dismissing it as crazy or unattainable. Furthermore, hear all new ideas openly and encourage those with merit.

No matter how outlandish an idea may seem, if the creative mind can justify it, let them run with it. See how far the concept can soar. However, managers can intervene if a creative project hinders the company’s mission and goals. Conversely, they can also share credit if an employee’s creativity proves profitable.

Allowing employees to contribute creatively fuels growth, boosts sales, and, ultimately, enhances profitability. Astute business owners who recognize the potential in a creative workplace can reap these benefits for decades.
