Description

We are currently looking for a Sous Chef. The primary purpose of this position is to prepare high-quality food in accordance with current federal, state, and local standards, guidelines, and regulations, as well as established organizational policies and procedures. Under the supervision of the Team Leader, and as directed by the Head Cook or Director of Dining Service, the Sous Chef is responsible for hot food preparation—including accompaniments and garnishes—to ensure excellent food service is provided at all times.

Essential Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Food Preparation & Execution: Prepares hot entrees, soups, vegetables, accompaniments, and garnishes following prep sheets and standard recipes for the dining room, healthcare center, cafeteria, and special functions.
  • Quality & Presentation: Serves eye-appealing, tasty food items. Conducts food temperature checks at each meal and tastes all prepared items to ensure strict quality standards.
  • Kitchen Operations: Performs advance preparation as indicated. Completes preparation records and ensures all food items are stored properly at the close of meal service.
  • Safety & Sanitation: Cleans work areas and equipment used in food preparation. Strictly follows safety, sanitation, and infection control rules and practices.
  • Problem Solving: Works well independently under proper direction. Exercises latitude to handle routine kitchen issues and confers with the Team Leader or Head Cook on unusual problems.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Demonstrates knowledge of fire safety procedures and assists with the evacuation of residents to a safe location in the event of an emergency.
  • Collaboration: Cooperates with staff across other departments and performs other duties as assigned to maintain a clean, safe, and neat environment for residents and staff.

Job Qualifications & Requirements

  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Experience: Prior cooking experience in a food service environment preferred.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding English.
  • Ability to utilize simple math concepts for recipe scaling, inventory, and measurements.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to collaborate effectively with a team.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, patience, and interest in working with people, especially older adults.
  • Capable of standing and maneuvering independently and safely around the work area on a tile floor for an 8-hour shift.
  • Capable of lifting up to 25 pounds or more, utilizing correct procedures for lifting and bending.
  • Sufficient manual dexterity to operate kitchen equipment (e.g., slicers, choppers, processors, knives) and safety equipment (e.g., fire extinguishers).
