Records Access Attorney (Contract)
Location: Remote – NYC-based
Duration: 6+ months
Start Date: ASAP
Bar Admission: NY Bar required

Overview
A government agency is seeking a Records Access Attorney to support compliance efforts with public records requests (FOIL, subpoenas, etc.). This fully remote contract role is ideal for attorneys with strong document review and legal research skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Process FOIL and subpoena requests, including first-level document review, redaction, and drafting acknowledgment letters.
  • Review releases, authorizations, and ID for access to sensitive records.
  • Support legal research, data entry, and archiving efforts.
  • Draft memoranda related to discovery and litigation.
  • Perform eDiscovery review and assist in tracking requests.
  • Support the Subpoena Unit with monitoring and processing tasks.
  • May accept or review service of subpoenas and participate in occasional meetings or court-related matters.

Qualifications

  • NY State Bar admission (newly admitted attorneys welcome).
  • Prior public sector and document review experience required.
  • Proficiency in Excel and excellent research/writing skills.
  • Mission-aligned candidates with nonprofit, youth-oriented, or community service backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply.
