Labor and Employment Attorney
Location: New York, NY 
Position Type: Full-Time, Long-Term Contract

On Call Counsel is seeking a Labor and Employment Attorney to join a prominent New York City government agency on a long-term contract basis. This is an excellent opportunity to gain meaningful experience while working on significant labor and employment matters that impact the city.

Responsibilities:

  • Defend the City in employment litigation matters, including discrimination, retaliation, wage-and-hour, and disciplinary proceedings.
  • Represent the agency in state and federal courts, as well as administrative forums such as the EEOC, NYSDHR, and OATH.
  • Conduct legal research, draft pleadings, motions, and briefs.
  • Take and defend depositions; prepare witnesses for testimony.
  • Advise agency leadership and HR on employment law compliance, policies, and best practices.
  • Negotiate settlements and participate in mediation when appropriate.

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an accredited law school.
  • Admission to the New York State Bar in good standing.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ litigation experience, preferably in employment law.
  • Strong legal writing, oral advocacy, and negotiation skills.
  • Ability to manage a substantial caseload and meet deadlines.
  • Public sector or government experience is a plus but not required.

Schedule & Compensation:

Full-time, Monday through Friday, normal business hours.

Long-term contract role (potential for extension).

Competitive hourly rate commensurate with experience.

Compensation:

  • $40/hour – 2 years of experience
  • $52/hour – 1–3 years
  • $56/hour – 3–7 years
  • $58/hour – 7+ years
