Position Title: Staff Attorney – Housing
Location: Bronx, NY (Hybrid or In-Person)
Duration: Full-Time, Permanent
Bar Admission: New York Bar required

Overview:
A Bronx-based nonprofit legal services provider is seeking a Staff Attorney to represent low-income clients in eviction proceedings. The attorney will manage a full caseload and appear in Bronx Housing Court and administrative hearings, with a focus on preserving housing and promoting stability for vulnerable populations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Represent clients in non-payment and holdover proceedings in Bronx Housing Court and NYCHA part
  • Handle administrative hearings (e.g., NYCHA termination hearings) as needed
  • Counsel clients on legal options and housing stability
  • Draft and file legal documents, including motions and orders to show cause
  • Represent clients at trial and other court appearances
  • Conduct outreach through community workshops and legal education sessions
  • Evaluate and assess the merits of assigned court cases
  • Maintain case files, notes, and electronic records in compliance with confidentiality standards
  • Collaborate with internal teams and partner organizations to facilitate referrals and services
  • Participate in ongoing legal trainings, conferences, and internal meetings
  • Perform general clerical and support tasks as needed

Qualifications:

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Licensed and in good standing with the New York State Bar
  • Minimum 2  years of relevant landlord tenant experience (2+ years and trial experience preferred)
  • Litigation experience in housing court or administrative forums preferred
  • Strong legal writing, communication, and research skills
  • Familiarity with NYC housing law, tenant rights, and public benefits
  • Experience working with low-income and diverse communities
  • Commitment to public interest law and social justice
  • Ability to manage a high-volume caseload in a fast-paced environment
  • Fluency in Spanish is preferred, but not required
  • Strong time management, professionalism, and sound judgment
