Schedule: Monday–Thursday On-Site | Friday Remote

Position Overview

A well-established New York City law firm is seeking an experienced Medical Malpractice Legal Assistant to support a Senior Trial Partner with a substantial plaintiff-side litigation caseload.

This is an opportunity for an organized, proactive legal professional to step into a key support role and help ensure continuity in case management, client communication, and litigation workflow as a long-tenured team member prepares to retire.

The ideal candidate will have at least five years of legal assistant or paralegal experience, preferably in medical malpractice or plaintiff-side personal injury litigation. Candidates with defense-side experience may also be considered if they have strong organizational skills and a willingness to learn.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day support to a Senior Trial Partner handling a substantial medical malpractice caseload.
  • Assist with the management and progression of plaintiff-side litigation matters.
  • Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients dealing with serious injuries, dismemberment, loss of life, and other traumatic circumstances.
  • Navigate the New York court system and manage filings through NYSCEF.
  • Maintain organized case files, calendars, deadlines, and litigation documentation.
  • Coordinate with the firm's calendar clerk and provide timely information needed for effective case management.
  • Track cases, deadlines, and workflow using SmartAdvocate or similar case-management software.
  • Coordinate with attorneys and other legal support professionals to keep matters moving efficiently.
  • Follow established procedures while adapting to the firm's workflows and priorities.
  • Help ensure deadlines are met and critical case details are not overlooked.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of legal assistant or paralegal experience, preferably in medical malpractice or plaintiff-side personal injury litigation.
  • Strong knowledge of litigation procedures and the New York court system.
  • NYSCEF experience required.
  • Experience with SmartAdvocate preferred; familiarity with comparable case-management systems is beneficial.
  • Exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and follow-through.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact empathetically and discreetly with clients.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities and maintain accurate case records.
  • A collaborative, dependable, and proactive approach to supporting attorneys and legal teams.
  • Willingness to learn firm-specific procedures and assist wherever needed.

Ideal Candidate

The successful candidate will be highly organized, accountable, and comfortable managing the details that keep complex plaintiff-side litigation on track. Medical malpractice experience is strongly preferred, along with sound judgment, professionalism, and the ability to work effectively within a team.
