The Attorney Phone Advisor serves as a frontline resource for members of a legal services program, providing legal information and advice by telephone, identifying and evaluating members' legal issues, and helping determine appropriate next steps. This is a non-billable position with no traditional caseload.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide practical legal guidance based on sound legal judgment, applicable law, and legal precedent.
  • Document calls, legal issues, advice provided, and follow-up information accurately in proprietary case-management software.
  • Pull calls from the queue when appropriate and conduct outbound calls to members as needed.
  • Review documents on behalf of members and provide guidance regarding their legal questions.
  • Prepare limited correspondence or other legal materials when appropriate; substantive plan letters are handled by a separate department.
  • Triage legal matters and determine when additional resources or specialized assistance may be appropriate.
  • Build rapport with members and provide a professional, personable, and supportive telephone experience.
  • Perform administrative and management functions associated with the practice of law.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding all member and organizational matters.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and other legal departments to ensure members receive appropriate assistance.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active admission and good standing with the New York State Bar.
  • Must have been admitted to the New York Bar prior to 2021.
  • Substantial legal experience, with seasoned and experienced attorneys particularly encouraged to apply.
  • Strong preference for experience in one or more of the following areas:
    • Estate Planning
    • Elder Law
    • Employment Law
    • Family Law
    • Landlord/Tenant
    • Collections
    • Intellectual Property
  • Strong legal research, writing, analytical, and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong client-service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish rapport with clients over the telephone.
  • Ability to ask effective questions, actively listen, and identify the key legal issues presented by a client.
  • Ability to explain legal concepts clearly and provide practical advice to individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Ability to work independently while also functioning effectively within a collaborative legal team.
  • Strong attention to detail and accurate documentation skills.
  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professional standards.

Position Details

This is a non-billable attorney position focused primarily on inbound and outbound telephone support for members. Attorneys will not maintain a traditional caseload and will not be responsible for extensive drafting, as plan letters and more substantial written work are handled by a dedicated department.

The position is primarily phone-based and requires attorneys who are comfortable providing legal guidance in a fast-paced, high-volume environment while maintaining professionalism, sound judgment, and a strong commitment to client service.

The initial training period is expected to last approximately 30 days and will be conducted onsite in Hauppauge, NY. Following successful completion of training, the position is expected to transition to remote work, depending on the attorney's proficiency and demonstrated ability to independently perform the role.

Experienced and retired attorneys who are interested in continuing to use their legal knowledge in a client-focused, lower-intensity practice environment are welcome to apply.
