Medical Malpractice Legal Assistant

New York, NY | Broadway Street
$105,000–$125,000, depending on experience
Monday–Thursday On-Site | Friday Remote
Direct Hire | Full-Time

Our client, a well-established NYC law firm, is seeking an experienced Medical Malpractice Legal Assistant to join its team and support a Senior Trial Partner.

This is an important opportunity for an organized and highly collaborative legal professional who understands the demands of plaintiff-side medical malpractice and personal injury litigation.

The Senior Trial Partner’s current legal assistant is retiring after 31 years with the firm, making this a unique opportunity to step into a long-standing role and help ensure a seamless transition for existing clients and cases.

About the Role

The ideal candidate will have 5+ years of legal assistant or paralegal experience, preferably in medical malpractice or plaintiff-side personal injury litigation. Candidates with some defense-side experience who demonstrate strong organizational skills and a willingness to learn will also be considered.

You will play a key role in keeping cases moving forward, coordinating with attorneys and staff, communicating with clients, and ensuring important deadlines and case-management responsibilities are handled effectively.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support a Senior Trial Partner with a substantial medical malpractice caseload
  • Assist with the day-to-day management and progression of plaintiff cases
  • Communicate professionally and compassionately with clients who have experienced serious injuries, loss of life, dismemberment, and other traumatic events
  • Understand and navigate the New York court system and NYSCEF
  • Maintain highly organized case files, calendars, deadlines, and litigation materials
  • Work closely with the firm’s calendar clerk and provide timely information necessary for effective case management
  • Assist with case tracking and workflow using SmartAdvocate or similar case-management software
  • Coordinate with attorneys and other members of the legal support team
  • Help ensure cases continue to move efficiently and that nothing falls through the cracks
  • Learn and adapt to the firm's processes and procedures

What We're Looking For

The most important quality is being a TEAM PLAYER.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is exceptionally organized, detail-oriented, and proactive
  • Understands the importance of keeping plaintiff cases moving
  • Has strong knowledge of litigation procedures and the New York court system
  • Is comfortable interacting with clients with empathy, professionalism, and discretion
  • Communicates effectively with attorneys, support staff, and clients
  • Works well as part of a team and is willing to jump in wherever needed
  • Is dependable, accountable, and willing to learn
  • Can demonstrate a history of working successfully within a team environment

SmartAdvocate experience is strongly preferred, but not required. The firm is willing to train the right candidate, particularly someone who has solid plaintiff-side experience and the right attitude.
