Part-Time Investigator

Location: Manhattan, New York
Schedule: Part-Time, 20 hours per week (schedule to be discussed during the interview process)
Pay Rate: $32 per hour
Assignment Duration: Temporary assignment anticipated through August 31, 2026

About the Opportunity

A public-sector legal office is seeking a Part-Time Investigator to support its Civil Practice team. Reporting directly to the Borough Administrator, the Investigator will provide investigative services throughout New York City's five boroughs and surrounding areas, working closely with attorneys and paralegals to support ongoing legal matters.

This role is ideal for a professional with strong investigative instincts, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work independently in the field. The position requires extensive travel throughout New York City and regular interaction with clients, witnesses, community members, and government agencies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Locate and interview complainants, witnesses, defendants, clients, and other relevant parties
  • Conduct field investigations and gather information related to active legal matters
  • Prepare detailed written summaries and reports of investigative findings
  • Conduct background checks, online research, and social media investigations
  • Utilize databases and research tools to obtain relevant case information
  • Communicate and coordinate with city agencies and external stakeholders as needed
  • Maintain accurate investigative documentation, including witness statements, chain-of-custody records, and investigative summaries
  • Locate clients in person and communicate with clients, family members, friends, neighbors, and associates when necessary
  • Serve subpoenas, motions, and other legal documents as assigned
  • Travel throughout the five boroughs and beyond to conduct investigations
  • Perform fieldwork during standard business hours and, when required, during non-traditional hours
  • Complete additional duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Prior experience conducting investigations in a professional setting
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to assess facts and gather reliable information
  • High level of integrity, professionalism, and discretion
  • Excellent listening, interviewing, and questioning skills
  • Strong written communication and report-writing abilities
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and social media platforms
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in the field
  • Ability to travel extensively throughout New York City (approximately 95% field-based work)
  • Familiarity with New York City neighborhoods and mass transit systems

Preferred Qualifications

  • Licensed Process Server
  • Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Legal Studies, Social Work, Public Administration, or a related field
  • Notary Public license
  • Spanish language proficiency
  • Experience working directly with diverse communities, vulnerable populations, or individuals in crisis
  • Strong customer service background
  • Advanced online research and investigative research skills
