Senior Accountant/Assistant Controller (Family Office)

Location: Bennington, VT (Hybrid, 2-3 days onsite per week)
Compensation: $100,000.00 - $150,000 base salary, plus bonus potential
Employment Type: Full-Time

Position Summary

A private, multi-entity family office is seeking a Senior Accountant or Assistant Controller to oversee accounting activities across a diverse portfolio of family-owned entities, investments, and assets. This is a hybrid position with 2-3 days onsite per week in the office located in Bennington, VT.

The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on accounting experience, including month-end close, closing entries, general ledger management, and coordination with outside CPAs and tax professionals. Experience working within a family office environment is ideal, although candidates from public accounting, investment management, hedge funds, or other complex multi-entity environments will also be considered.

The family office currently manages approximately 24 entities, ranging from entities with regular activity to others with only a few transactions per month. The role will also support accounting and recordkeeping related to a variety of family assets and investments, including real estate, collectibles, agricultural/farm assets, and other holdings.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day accounting and general ledger activities across approximately 24 legal entities.
  • Prepare and post month-end closing entries and perform account reconciliations.
  • Manage the monthly and year-end close process, ensuring accuracy and completeness of financial records.
  • Maintain accounting records for entities with varying levels of transaction activity.
  • Track and account for family-office assets, investments, real estate, collectibles, farm-related assets, and other holdings.
  • Coordinate closely with outside CPAs, tax advisors, attorneys, vendors, and other external professionals.
  • Provide outside tax professionals with accurate financial information and documentation needed for tax filings and planning.
  • Assist with tax-related accounting and reporting; prior tax experience is highly beneficial.
  • Research and resolve accounting discrepancies and ensure proper classification of transactions.
  • Maintain supporting schedules and documentation for entities, investments, and assets.
  • Assist with financial reporting, cash management, budgeting, and other accounting projects as needed.
  • Ensure appropriate accounting records and documentation are maintained across all entities.
  • Support the Controller/ownership with special projects and ad hoc financial analysis.

Qualifications

  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, with strong general ledger and close experience.
  • Demonstrated experience preparing closing entries and completing month-end reconciliations.
  • Proven experience working directly with outside CPAs and tax professionals.
  • CPA strongly preferred.
  • Experience with QuickBooks Desktop is required.
  • Strong Excel skills and proficiency with accounting systems.
  • Experience managing accounting for multiple legal entities.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage competing priorities independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, particularly when coordinating with external advisors and vendors.
  • Strong attention to detail, discretion, and professionalism when handling confidential financial information.

Preferred Experience

  • Family office accounting experience.
  • Hedge fund, investment management, private investment, or alternative investment accounting experience.
  • Public accounting experience.
  • Tax accounting or tax-related experience.
  • Experience accounting for real estate, collectibles, agricultural/farm assets, or other non-traditional investments.
  • CPA or active CPA license.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a hands-on accounting professional who is comfortable owning the books rather than simply processing transactions. They should be capable of working independently across numerous entities, understand the importance of a clean and accurate close, and be comfortable serving as the internal accounting point person while coordinating with outside CPAs, tax professionals, and vendors.

A family-office background is a plus, but the client is open to candidates who bring the right combination of multi-entity accounting, close experience, CPA/public accounting exposure, and strong communication skills from other environments.
