The Asylum Application Help Centers will help thousands of asylum seekers currently in New York City apply for asylum, bringing them one step closer to work authorization. Interested asylum seekers will schedule a one-on-one appointment at the application help center, where trained application assistants will work with the applicant to answer questions. Experienced immigration lawyers will be on site to supervise application assistants and provide guidance and interpreters will be on site to provide in person language assistance.

Asylum Application Assistant (Temporary)

Pay Rate:

Application Assistant: $35 per hour

Application Assistant – JD: $41 per hour

Application Assistant – Bar Admitted JD: $59 per hour

Schedule:

  • Flexible Schedule (Monday – Saturday)
  • 1-6 days/week
  • 8 hours/day – 9-5

We are seeking highly motivated, empathy driven, temporary Asylum Application Assistants to work one-on-one with asylum seekers to assist them in understanding how to complete an asylum application by eliciting important information from them and guiding them through to completion. Each Asylum Application Assistant will be trained on how to assist, handle approximately 2-3 appointments per day and will be supervised and supported by an onsite Supervising Attorney.

Responsibilities:

  • Support asylum seekers in completing asylum applications, working with each applicant one-on-one to answer questions and guide them through the process.
  • Comply with NYC program guidance and reporting requirements.
  • Work with interpreters as needed.

Qualifications:

  • Experience in completing and complying with government forms and procedures.
  • A willingness to undergo training about immigration procedures.
  • A willingness to work in person and on site at the Center for five 8-hour shifts per week (except holidays) through a projected completion date of August 4 (subject to change).
  • Proficiency in Spanish is strongly preferred.

Asylum Application Supervising Attorney (Temporary)

$150-200 per hour based on experience

Schedule:

  • Flexible Schedule (Monday – Saturday)
  • 1-6 days/week
  • 8 hours/day – 9-5

We are seeking highly skilled and motivated Supervising Attorneys with extensive immigration experience to staff application centers for asylum seekers. The role of the Supervising Attorney is to answer questions and provide support and training to application assistants and asylum seekers as they fill out applications. There will be multiple Supervising Attorneys on-site at the center each day. The Supervising Attorney will foster and encourage a positive, productive environment and will bring a ‘can-do’ attitude to the wide variety of questions that arise.

Responsibilities:

  • Train and support application assistants as they support asylum seekers in submitting asylum applications.
  • Advise application assistants and asylum seekers regarding the requirements for submitting an asylum claim.*
  • Ensure application assistants comply with NYC program guidance and reporting requirements.
  • Comply with NYC program guidance and reporting requirements.

Qualifications:

  • Admitted to practice in good standing in any U.S. jurisdiction.
  • Clear of any attorney disciplinary charges sustained in the past 10 years in any jurisdiction in which they were licensed.
  • At least 2 years of full-time experience practicing immigration law, including asylum and other humanitarian immigration benefits.
  • Willingness to work in person and on site at the NYC Navigation Center for the duration of the project, which is anticipated to be through August 4. (Potential to extend)
  • Proficiency in Spanish is strongly preferred
  • Candidates must have an EOIR number
