Under the direct supervision of the Residential Manager and the Mental Health Program team, including the Program Coordinator and Program Director, the Residential Counselor must ensure the safety and well-being of individuals served in our Mental Health Residential Program. Residential Counselors are to act as teachers, roles models, and counselors to the individuals we serve with mental health challenges. Residential Counselors should treat program participants with dignity and respect, as well as foster a home like environment that is caring, enabling, empowering and supportive to help them progress to a more independent residential setting.
• Assist, supervise, support, counsel, include, and instruct individuals in every aspect of daily living skills, to promote independence, and to be viable, integrated, and productive individuals of their community. o Educate and instruct program residents in areas of: o Symptom Management o Life safety training o Health / socialization / sexuality training o Communication skills o Recreation and leisure skills o Home care / eating / cooking skills o Independent community living skills o Cognitive skills o Vocational / prevocational training o Problem solving skills o Substance Abuse prevention skills
• Participate in the creation, and implementation, of person-centered treatment plans. • Respond to crises of distress. Be able to stay calm in a stressful environment. Assure that individuals do not injure themselves or others. • Document all data and paperwork correctly at one time. Complete regular documentation, on a computer-based program, for billing purposes. • Provide safe transportation for residents within the community, on appointments, etc. • Work well as a team member with supervisors and co-workers. Follow managements instructions; initiate and precisely complete duties in a timely manner • Maintain the residence in a safe, clean, and stress-free manner. • Maintain all required trainings and certifications throughout employment
• High School Diploma required and one year of experience working with mental health population preferred • Computer Skills and Analytical thinking required
